Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Harrisburg Area and The Home Depot volunteers help preserve home in partnership with U.S. military veteran in Harrisburg

Harrisburg, PA October 12, 2016 – Volunteers from Team Depot, The Home Depot associate-led volunteer force, will complete work on Thursday, October 27th 2016 to help preserve the home of Shaunte Sloane, a local U.S. military veteran.  The project is part of Habitat for Humanity’s Home Preservation Program, an initiative funded by The Home Depot Foundation to the homes of U.S. military veterans and their families.

In partnership with the veteran, Team Depot volunteers will complete landscaping and install a privacy fence to improve the appearance of the exterior of Ms. Sloane’s home. In combination with this project, Team Depot has completed 9 veteran Home Preservation projects.   These projects range from landscaping, to planting flowers, shrubs, bulbs, installing chain link fencing and privacy fencing, the installation of a new front porch and steps, cutting grass, weeding, trimming bushes, power washing and staining decks, shoring up deck stairs, installing new downspouts, solar lights, a new mailbox and post to removing a brush. October 27th, 2016 will be a culminating event to commemorate all of the work this partnership has been able to complete within the community.

Ms. Sloane served in the United States Navy for four years as a Seaman aboard the USS Dwight D Eisenhower in Norfolk, Va. Leaving the military was a tough decision, but being a single mother of three was even tougher. Since then she has earned a degree as a Dental Hygienist, while working for the American Education Services as a Correspondence Specialist.

Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Harrisburg Area is one of approximately 45 local Habitat offices selected to participate in the 2016 Repair Corps program and Home Preservation Program, through which volunteers will help build or repair more than 200 veterans’ homes across the country. Ms. Sloane has been able to actively maintain her home thanks in part to extensive exterior work and interior repairs completed by Habitat for Humanity of the Greater Harrisburg Area through various funding opportunities provided to veterans.

Habitat’s Repair Corps program supports projects ranging from new construction to home repair projects such as weatherproofing, installation of access ramps and kitchen or bathroom renovations for wheelchair access.

Since 2011, The Home Depot Foundation has funded Habitat’s Repair Corp program, which to date has helped repair or renovate the homes of nearly 600 U.S. military veterans and their families.
